Photographing children takes patience and good humour above all. A successful session is not one where everyone poses perfectly, but one where each person’s true personality shines through. Here are seven tips to help you prepare with peace of mind.
1. Choose the right time of day
Children are at their best after a good night’s sleep or a nap, and before the tiredness of the end of the day sets in. Morning and late afternoon are also when the light is softest and the heat is easier to bear.
2. Choose somewhere they feel happy
Home, the garden or a place your child knows will help them feel confident. A beach or a park gives them space to move around, which makes for natural images.
3. Keep it short and fun
A short session with breaks is better than a long one that wears everyone out. When your child is having fun, the photos follow.
4. Let them play
Running, jumping, hiding, cuddling a parent: spontaneous images are often the most touching. Try not to step in too much and let the photographer guide things gently.
5. Wear comfortable, coordinated outfits
Choose clothes your child can move around freely in, in colours that go well together without having to match exactly. Avoid big logos and very busy patterns.
6. Do not force the smiles
Constantly asking for a smile often produces stiff expressions. A glance, a laugh or a moment of concentration says much more.
7. Bring things to reassure them
A favourite cuddly toy, a snack, some water: these little things head off tantrums. Pack something for yourself too, as parents sometimes need a break just as much as the kids do.
