Photographing underwater has nothing to do with a photo taken on the beach. Between waterproofing, changing light, fading colours and the need to stay comfortable while freediving or submerged, underwater photography is a discipline of its own. Here is the gear and the principles that make it possible.

The waterproof housing

It is the centrepiece: a rigid or soft case that protects the camera from water down to a certain depth. It has external controls to adjust the camera from outside and a port through which the lens sees. The quality of the seals and their maintenance are vital: a single grain of sand can cause a leak.

The port: flat or dome

Depending on the subject, a flat port (for close-ups) or a dome port (for wide-angle shots, portraits while immersed and underwater landscapes) is used. The choice determines the lens and the final look.

Light and colours

Water absorbs colours, starting with red: the deeper you go, the bluer the image becomes. This is compensated with underwater strobes, lamps, or by working near the surface where natural light is abundant. In New Caledonia, the lagoon offers clear, bright water that is particularly well suited to the exercise.

Weighting and the model’s comfort

For an underwater session with a model, suitable weighting is used, breathing and safety are carefully managed, and communication is by signs. Comfort and trust are essential to obtain natural expressions.

• know your limits and the model’s;
• respect the marine environment: touch nothing, take nothing;
• check the weather and the sea conditions.
