What camera does a professional photographer use? The question comes up often. The real answer is more nuanced: it is not one camera but a whole set of complementary gear, chosen according to the type of project. Here, in general terms, is what makes up a professional photographer’s bag. The exact contents vary from one photographer to another and from one session to the next.
The camera body: the heart of the system
Professionals work with large-sensor bodies (mirrorless or DSLR), which offer better image quality in low light, a wider dynamic range, faster autofocus and far greater robustness than a consumer camera. Many use two bodies to have a backup and to change lenses without losing time.
Lenses: more important than the body
The lens strongly influences the look of an image. You will generally find:
- a versatile zoom for coverage work;
- a fast prime lens (35 mm, 50 mm or 85 mm) for portraits and images with a shallow depth of field;
- a wide-angle for landscapes, architecture and underwater photography;
- a telephoto lens to keep your distance during a ceremony or to photograph animals.
Lighting: mastering the light
Speedlights, continuous lighting, reflectors, diffusers: a professional photographer does not wait for perfect light, they create or correct it. Power and storage
- several spare batteries, essential over a full day;
- fast memory cards, with dual slots to record twice;
- backup drives: files are copied to several media the same day.
Protection and transport gear
Waterproof bags, cloths, moisture-absorbing sachets, rain covers: salt, heat and humidity are the enemies of gear in the tropics. A professional maintains and cleans their equipment regularly.
The digital workshop
After the session, the work continues on a powerful computer, a calibrated screen for accurate colours and software for selecting and retouching. This is where the image takes its final form.
Does gear make the photographer?
