Light is the raw material of photography. The same smile, in the same place, can give a flat image or a magnificent portrait depending on the time and the weather. In the tropics, understanding light is even more important: the sun is high, powerful and changes quickly. Here is how to make the most of it in Nouméa.

Golden hour: photographers’ favourite light

Golden hour is the period after sunrise and before sunset. The sun is low, the light is soft, warm, golden and flattering to faces: no harsh shadows, rich colours, often a spectacular sky. It is the ideal moment for a portrait, a couple’s session or a family session on the beach.

A shorter golden hour in the tropics

The closer you get to the equator, the faster the sun rises and sets. In New Caledonia, the beautiful evening light lasts less time than in mainland Europe in summer: you need to be ready and on site in advance. The sun also sets earlier in the southern winter (from about June to August).

Midday: the difficult light

Between 10 am and 3 pm the sun is at its zenith. Faces are marked by shadows under the eyes and nose, colours are harsh, contrast is extreme. If you have to shoot at this time, look for open shade (under a tree, a porch, along a building): the light there is soft and even.

A cloudy sky: a pleasant surprise

Contrary to what people think, an overcast sky is an excellent ally for portraits: the clouds act as a huge diffuser, the light is soft and colours are even. A photo session does not necessarily have to be cancelled if it is grey.

Backlighting, a technique to master

Placing the sun behind the subject creates a beautiful halo of light in the hair, provided the face is properly exposed (reflector, flash or suitable settings). It is a technique where the photographer’s experience makes the difference.

What time should you choose for your session?

• Portraits and couples: 1 to 1.5 hours before sunset.
• Children and babies: in the morning, when they are rested (and it is not too hot).
• Underwater photography: mid-morning, when the sun lights the water well.
• Weddings: schedule the couple portraits for golden hour.
