New Caledonia means a UNESCO World Heritage lagoon, beaches, islands, bush landscapes and spectacular coastlines. Whether you are just passing through or live on the “Caillou”, here is a selection of places that lend themselves particularly well to photography, with a few tips for each.

Nouméa and its surroundings

Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons

Nouméa’s two big beaches, easy to reach, with palm trees, sailing boats and superb sunsets. Ideal for portraits and family sessions at the end of the day.

Nouméa’s coastline and neighbourhoods

Coastal paths, architecture, colourful walls, streets: the city also offers an urban backdrop for more artistic portraits or fashion images (see fashion and portfolio photographer in Nouméa).

The islands and the lagoon

The Isle of Pines

Nicknamed “the island closest to paradise”, it is famous for its white-sand beaches, its columnar pines and above all the natural pool of Oro Bay: shallow, crystal-clear water that is extremely photogenic.

Lifou and Jokin Bay

The Loyalty Islands offer cliffs, coves and turquoise water: Jokin Bay, on Lifou, is a beautiful example.

The Grande Terre

The Roche Percée of Bourail

A rock arch plunging into the sea on the west coast. Superb at sunrise or sunset, with plays of light on the cliffs.

Hienghène

On the east coast, beaches and spectacular rock formations in lush, unspoiled nature.

Tips for photographing these places

• Arrive early or stay until late afternoon for the light.
• Respect custom and private property: some sites are on customary land, so find out and ask permission if necessary.
• Protect your equipment from salt and humidity.
• Check sea and road conditions before setting off.
