“What am I going to wear?” is the question I am asked most before a session. The right outfit puts you at ease, works with the setting and makes for beautiful images. Here are a few simple guidelines, adapted to Nouméa’s climate.
Choose a colour palette
Pick two or three colours that go well together and carry them through your outfits. Neutral tones (white, beige, grey, navy) work with almost any setting. For a session at the beach or in the lagoon, light tones and blues blend nicely with the water, while a brightly coloured piece makes you stand out against a natural background.
Favour plain colours
Small prints, fine stripes and big logos draw the eye and can create odd effects in photos. Plain colours leave room for your face and the setting.
Think about the climate
In the tropics, heat and humidity matter. Choose light, breathable fabrics such as cotton or viscose. Linen is comfortable but creases quickly, so iron it or bring a change of clothes. Very light colours can show perspiration, so keep that in mind if the session is in the middle of the day.
Shoes and accessories
Wear comfortable shoes if you will be walking a lot, and go barefoot or in simple sandals for the beach. Accessories (a hat, jewellery, a scarf) can add character, as long as they stay understated.
For a couple or a family
Aim for harmony rather than uniformity: you do not all need to wear the same thing, the colours just need to work together. One person dressed up a little more and another more casual is no problem as long as the tones complement each other.
What to bring on the day
Bring a bottle of water, a comb or brush, a pocket mirror, tissues and a small towel. For outdoor sessions, add a hat or sunscreen, and something to change into if needed.
