In New Caledonia there is no bad season for photography, but each period has its strengths and constraints. Here is how to choose the time of your trip or session, according to the light, the weather and the atmosphere you want. The periods given are approximate and vary from year to year.
The cool season (roughly May to October)
Temperatures are pleasant, the air is drier and the light is often very clear, with cloudless skies. It is the most comfortable period for outdoor sessions: less heat, less humidity, soft light at the end of the day. The sun does set earlier, though (around 5:30 pm in the depths of the southern winter): plan your session accordingly.
The hot season (roughly November to April)
It is hot and humid, the light is strong, storms are more frequent and the cyclone season generally runs from about January to March. The lagoon water is very warm, ideal for aquatic sessions (see aquatic photography in Nouméa). Sunsets can be spectacular, with coloured clouds.
Which period for which type of photo?
- Portrait, couple, family: cool season for comfort, or early morning and late afternoon in the hot season.
- Wedding: the cool season is often preferred (see getting married in New Caledonia: season and venue).
- Underwater photography: all year round, with warmer water in the hot season.
- Landscapes: crystal-clear light in the cool season; dramatic skies in the hot season.
Plan a weather plan B
A shower does not mean the end of the session: tropical rain is often brief, and a grey sky gives beautiful soft light for portraits. Arrange a back-up date when you book.
