“Why does a photo session cost that much?” It’s a fair question, and it deserves a clear answer. A photographer’s price isn’t simply the hour spent in front of you: it covers a whole range of work, costs and skills. Here is how it’s built, and how to read a quote.

What you pay for isn’t just “the session”

A one-hour session is like the visible tip of an iceberg. It comes with:

• preparation: talking with you, scouting, organisation;
• shooting time and any travel;
• culling and editing: often several hours per session;
• delivery: online gallery, export and, if you wish, prints;
• how the images will be used: personal, family, commercial, advertising.

The main factors that change a price

• The duration of the shoot and the number of locations.
• The type of project: a portrait, a family session, a wedding, an underwater shoot or corporate coverage don’t need the same time or the same equipment.
• The number of edited images delivered.
• Travel: Nouméa and Greater Nouméa, the bush, the islands.
• Usage rights: a photo for your family album isn’t used in the same way as a photo for a brand’s advertising.
• Options: prints, albums, a second photographer, fast turnaround.

What the price also has to cover

An independent photographer pays for their own equipment (camera bodies, lenses, flashes, underwater housings for underwater photography), insurance, software, backups, training, website and social contributions. How to read a photographer’s quote

• Check the coverage time included.
• Look at the number of edited photos delivered, not just the number of photos taken.
• Ask about the delivery time.
• Specify the intended use (personal, professional, social media, print).
• Look at the deposit and cancellation terms.

Why I don’t publish a single price list

Every project is different: a 30-minute portrait, a full-day wedding and an underwater session simply can’t be compared. Rather than a fixed price list that wouldn’t suit anyone, I prefer to talk with you and prepare a clear quote tailored to your needs. In New Caledonia, prices are of course quoted in Pacific francs (XPF).

Comparing sensibly
